Monastrell Molino Loco Murcia Spain
This wine is a beautiful deep and vibrant red colour, with purple hues on the rim. On the nose, it shows elegant ripe red plum and cherry notes. The palate is very well structured, with soft tannins and a delicate, fruity finish.Suitable for vegetariansSuitable for vegansMolino Loco is made by the Castaño family in Yecla and takes its name from the windmill ('molino') that sits on the edge of the vineyards where they produce their fruit. In contrast to other windmills, which turn in windy conditions, this particular windmill is "loco", the Spanish for crazy, as it turns only on calm, still days. VINEYARDS The vineyards are located at an altitude of 500 metres above sea level. They are dry-farmed and the clay soil is poor, meaning that the roots of the vines grow deep into the earth in their search for minerals and nutrients. This helps to ensure healthy, ripe, full of flavour grapes. The Monastrell vineyards are over 18 years old, while the Syrah vines are slightly younger, averaging around 15 years. VINIFICATION The grapes were gently crushed before being fermented and macerated on their skins for 10 days at a controlled temperature of 24-26ºC in stainless-steel tanks. After fermentation the wine was aged very briefly in oak to round out the tannins. The delicate grape processing preserved the natural fruit purity and freshness that is so typical of the Molino Loco style.

The wine is fresh and vibrant on the nose with fresh pear, white nectarine and grapefruit aromas leaping out of the glass with a hint of honeysuckle present. The palate is fresh, clean and refreshing having flavours that are complimentary to the aromas as well as a distinct Meyer lemon character. The grapes are harvested at night and it was fermented in stainless steel to retain the freshness of the varietal. And smile while doing it.The Maraekakaho Vineyard is planted on an ancient river terrace that was formed by the Ngaruroro River which now flows around 60 meters below the vineyard. With its headwaters in the Kaweka Ranges to the west of Hawkes Bay, the river has created the landscapes through glacial melts, floods and droughts over the last few hundred thousand years. The old terraces that remain are made up of greywacke (a compressed sandstone) boulders and gravels from the ranges, and a topsoil borne of windblown loess, volcanic ash and humus created by ancient forests and vegetation.
