Weingut Messmer, in the Pfalz region, was founded by Herbert and Elizabeth Messmer in 1960. It's situated in Burrweiler, in the south-west of Germany, less than 50 miles from the border with France and to the north-west of Stuttgart. The yellow sandstone buildings had already been home to winemaking for around 250 years before they arrived.It's still in the family's hands today, with son Martin overseeing the estate alongside his brother Gregor, who supervises production in the vineyard and winery. Their vineyards cover 27 hectares, with around two-thirds of the area planted with white varieties (predominantly Riesling, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc) and the rest with red varieties (Pinot Noir in the main).The terroir is made up of seven different soil types: slate, red sandstone, granite, limestone, loam, sand and 'muschelkalk' - a calcareous soil with substantial deposits of fossilised mussel shells. Gregor works to preserve the health and mineral content of the soils - they use only organic fertilisers, and in 2011 they began the biodynamic cultivation of some sites. In the winery fermentations are cool, slow and small batch; grapes are only ever partially de-stemmed; and wines are bottled without fining and with only the gentlest filtration.

This is an intense red wine offering aromas of black fruit and black pepper on the nose. Great flavours of baked cherries and cinnamon develop on the palate.

Molino Loco is made by the Castaño family in Yecla and takes its name from the windmill ('molino') that sits on the edge of the vineyards where they produce their fruit. In contrast to other windmills, which turn in windy conditions, this particular windmill is "loco", the Spanish for crazy, as it turns only on calm, still days.

VINEYARDS The vineyards are located at an altitude of 500 metres above sea level. They are dry-farmed and the clay soil is poor, meaning that the roots of the vines grow deep into the earth in their search for minerals and nutrients. This helps to ensure healthy, ripe, full of flavour grapes. The Monastrell vineyards are over 18 years old, while the Syrah vines are slightly younger, averaging around 15 years.

VINIFICATION The grapes were gently crushed before being fermented and macerated on their skins for 10 days at a controlled temperature of 24-26ºC in stainless-steel tanks. After fermentation the wine was aged very briefly in oak to round out the tannins. The delicate grape processing preserved the natural fruit purity and freshness that is so typical of the Molino Loco style. 

Grown on the rugged slopes of the Abruzzo hills, this is a rich, deep wine. The bouquet and palate are both rich in blackberry flavours, with hints of spice.

A full flavoured wine, perfect with traditional Italian dishes. 

Intense ruby red wine with pleasant floral aromas of ripe red fruit and liquorice. The palate is well balanced with warm herb notes and it has gentle, elegant tannins with hints of vanilla from the oak ageing.

Serve with roasted vegetables and meat dishes.

A deeply coloured, medium bodied, spicy red with aromas of ripe plums and black cherry. The palate combines warm, juicy red fruit flavours with savoury, lightly smoky characters, a hint of bitter chocolate and nip of tannin on the finish. Produced from grapes grown in the southwest and eastern Sicily.

Drink with juicy burgers with a slab of mozzarella or charred lamb steaks.

Passimora is produced from grapes that have been slightly dried in the warm Sicilian sun. The wine has an intense character, charming and persistent. It is deep red in colour and has a bouquet of red fruit and pomegranate accompanied by sweet notes of dried plum and candied fruit.  The wine is matured in stainless steel for approximately 4 months. No oak is used.

Excellent with cured meat platters, seasoned and fresh cheese, tempura vegetables and stews.

This wine combines delicious red cherry and dried cranberry concentration, with a touch of dark spice. The palate has wild bramble and cherry pie notes. It finishes bright, fresh and gently toasty.

Fruit is sourced from a vineyard in Monterey, California’s Central Coast region and sit next to a chain of hills which separate the vineyards from the Pacific coast. The site benefits from the cooling breezes from the Pacific and as such lends itself to Pinot Noir. Fruit is destemmed before undergoing a period of cold maceration. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks and 30% of the blend has then spent 8 months on medium toast French oak.

From maritime vineyards in Marlborough’s south easterly extremes in the Blind River Valley. We exploit this coastal fruit by capturing a breezy finesse over the classic cranberry and wild strawberry aromas giving us a wine with enough bite and texture to be foody but with enough generosity of fruit to be a delicious glass on its own. A lick of oak in the winemaking lends a little soothing creaminess to the whole.

Made to go with delicate, rich and aromatic food such as duck dim sums, tempura fried vegetables and oriental salads.

This medium bodied wine has an enticing nose of freshly baked Bakewell tart, homemade jam and almonds. The palate is fresh and bright and this freshness remains throughout with a lovely defining acidity which makes it a great food match.

The grapes for this wine were grown in the cooler Hawkes Bay region on New Zealands North Island. A small proportion of the wine was aged in oak to highlight aromatics and provide extra freshness to the palate. 

Try with crispy duck pancakes, grilled quail, seared salmon or tuna, charcuterie, ham and other cold meats. 

This soft succulent California Pinot shows ripe fruit flavours with a delicate mouthfeel. A swirl reveals aromas of dried red currants with hints of ripe cranberry, spicy cloves and vanilla. On the palate a refreshing touch of acidity is carried by racy flavours of pomegranates and black plums, while soft tannins on the finish are complimented by flavours reminiscent of grilled strawberries.

Drink with grilled salmon steaks or spicy chicken.

Light cherry red in colour leads to an elegant nose of red cherry and raspberry fruit with gentle spice notes from barrel aging. The palate is silky, fine and hugely inviting. Delicious ripe summer fruit character is perfectly balanced by soft tannins and refreshing acidity. It has a long and elegant finish.

Very good with white meats and oily fish. The perfect partner for mushroom-parmesan risotto.
The Casablanca Valley is influenced by its proximity to the Pacific Ocean and its coastal breezes that moderate temperatures. The area ranges from soft rolling hills to higher hills toward the Coastal  Mountain range in the east. The poor, sandy loam soils are alluvial in origin, relatively shallow and very permeable, resulting in yields which are generally low in comparison with other Chilean valleys.  Temperatures are much cooler here, allowing the grapes to ripen very slowly to produce rich flavoured wines. The Casablanca Valley is influenced by the Pacific Ocean and the Humboldt Current, resulting in constant humidity and average temperatures of 25ºC in the summer and 14ºC in the winter. The spring of 2015 was cooler than average and the relative humidity was higher. This caused uneven budbreak and later ripening. An increase in rainfall forced an earlier harvest in April. The grapes are harvested into 400-kg bins and transported to the winery, where first the clusters and then the grapes (after destemming) are selected on a conveyor belt. Once in the tank, they undergo a pre-fermentation maceration for 3 days, followed naturally by alcoholic fermentation with native yeasts. During this stage, temperatures are kept at 24-26º C, with a gentle pump-over routine. A 2-3-day post-fermentation maceration is then carried out. Malolactic fermentation occurs spontaneously in stainless steel tanks and barrels. The wine is filtered through 1-micron membranes and then bottled. 70% of the wine is aged for 6 months in French oak barrels.

The Bio Bio has a moderate humid Mediterranean climate with warm days and cool nights prolonging the growing season. Average rainfall is among highest of all Chilean wine valleys. The Bio Bio’s higher rainfall, strong winds and broader extremes make for more challenging conditions than those of Chile’s more northerly regions. Vine growing here requires more patience, skill and nerve than in other valleys. The Pinot grows on a red clay soil here. The pressing is at low temperature to extract colour and aromas but no harsh tannins. The fermentation is relatively cool with gentle pump-overs. After fermentation is finished, 10% of the blend is aged for 6 months in French oak to give more complexity to the wine.

Ruby red in colour. Gorgeous flavours, almost syrupy in its concentration. Dark, rich and potent, with layers of complex, black cherry, raspberry and cinnamon. Deep, with pretty fruit cake and spicy aromatics.

100% estate grown grapes from the Dealul Uberland vineyard. The altitude here is around 250 m, with soil rich in iron oxide and loess on fractured limestone bedrock.

25% of the grapes were transfered directly into 1000 Kg bins without being destemmed then sealed and put through a carbonic macceration fermentation for 10 days in order to produce the strawberry fruit part of the blend. The remaining 75%was destemmed lightly crushed and then macerated and fermented normally at 25°C in stainless steel automated fermenters. Both wines were then seperately pressed and the noncarbonic maceration wine was lightly oaked for 2 months before blending.

A bright, vibrant wine with spicy red berry fruit such as blueberry and mulberry, exotic spice and creamy vanilla, evident ripe tannins and a long finish. This wine drinks well young but will improve over the next 6 to 8 years, gaining more complexity. 

The grapes were hand-picked into small baskets and taken to the cellar. A portion was fermented in open bins and hand-punched four times a day. The rest was fermented in a rototank. No commercial yeast was used as these grapes ferment well with their own yeast. The wine matured in a mixture of French and American oak barrels for 14 months. Approximately 30% was new wood.

Intense ruby red colour with a complex bouquet, reminiscent of cherries, raspberries and redcurrants. The oak ageing adds a pleasant roasted and spicy aroma. The palate is full bodied, supple and well balanced with a long finish.

Just before harvest the grapes, when the grapes are fully mature and are ready to be picked, the stems of the bunches are twisted so that no further nourishment reaches the grapes, thus inducing a natural drying of the grapes on the vine. The bunches are left for about 12 days and lose approximately 25 - 30% of their weight in water, concentrating their flavours before harvest.

This wine has a complex bouquet with notes of ripe plums, vanilla, tobacco and mellow harmonious structure that carries through to the palate. 10% of the wines is aged in oak.

This is a deep, ruby coloured, concentrated red blend shows prominent aromas of dark cherry, blackcurrant and vanilla. On the palate cinnamon, sweet spice and ripe, juicy dark fruit together with a firm tannin structure, ensures good length and an enduring finish.

Grapes were harvested at optimal ripeness. After de-stem, they were cold soaked for two days to extract more fruit character and enhance colour. The wine was inoculated with specially selected yeast strains and fermented until dry. Free-run juice was racked to barrel where it underwent malolactic fermentation. The wine was then racked from the lees and returned to barrel for 18 months of maturation.

Recommendation This wine can be enjoyed on its own or with a variety of flavourful meat dishes.

Our Shiraz is sourced from ancient Victorian soils in order to achieve a wine with greater finesse, purity and structure as well as typical eucalypt flavours and saline finish associated with the area. Picked at night and crushed within an hour of picking before being sent to the fermentation tanks. The Shiraz grapes were fermented in temperature-controlled tanks maintained at 22 - 25ºC to avoid extracting any harsh tannins, with the fermentations pumped over to extract good colour. 20% of the final blend is barrel aged. The winemaker also added 5% Malbec at the end of the whole process - a sneaky technique that gives a mulberry fruit twist on the finish.

Tempranillo 95%, Garnacha 5%. The vines in La Muga and Los Poyatos vineyards are mostly very old Tempranillo bush vines. Really healthy grapes were harvested and after slow fermentation in tank at controlled temperatures the wine was transferred to barrel for 6 months. A mixture of a very few of new American oak barrels, just to give the spice and toast aromas but mostly 2nd and 3rd year barrels of predominantly French oak were used to promote the evolution of the wine from a bright fruit bomb to something more mellow with a roundness and the unmistakeable stamp of something good, a “Semi-Crianza” of sorts.

The hue of the medium dark purple Zinfandel, displays all the attractive qualities of a young wine. Pleasant ripe red currants and fresh strawberry immediately come to mind followed by caramelised sugar and toast. The savouriness of bright red fruits are enveloped in the succulent juicy wine which possesses soft, supple tannins.

Serve with full flavoured meat dishes such as spare ribs or beef brisket or with tomato based pasta dishes.
