Bordeaux
One of the largest regions in the world and regulated into Cru Classe, Bourgeois & Petits Chateaux. The left bank of the Gironde river sites the Medoc where Cabernet Sauvignon predominates while the right bank contrasts with St Emilion and Fronsac where the Merlot grape makes the major part of the blend. To the south of the regional capital lies the Graves and the fine sweet wines of Sauternes and Barsac. In between there are many Petits Chateaux producing good value reds and light fresh whites from sauvignon and semillon blends. Bordeaux reds and sweet whites can age for ten years and longer depending on the vintage.
