1985 Vintage Port Description ...

 A very deep coloured Port with a garnet edge. Full bodied and superbly balanced with plenty of blackcurrant, cassis and liquorice notes. The palate is rounded with ripe brambly dark fruit with a dry finish that is the house style.

This port is ready to drink and once opened can be kept for up to one month.

Great after dinner or with chocolate desserts or cheeses. 

Russet colour with brilliant crimson highlights and a fragrant, ripe-fruit bouquet. Its smooth, silky texture and subtle oak nuances are balanced by a fresh acidity and tannic ‘grip’ that culminate in a long, elegant finish.

 How to serve:

Chill to just below cellar temperature (about 10ºC). In summer, serve at the end of the meal as a refreshing alternative or try as one of the few dessert wines to match chocolate

During the January following each vintage, Fonseca sets aside a reserve of very concentrated, powerful vintage quality red ports, selected primarily from the firm’s own quintas and judged according to their ageing potential. These are placed in cask and cellared. Tawny ports of age are blended across several vintages to maintain quality and continuity of style, and thus show an “apparent”, or average, age on the label rather than a vintage date. As tawny ports age, they grow lighter in colour, as they throw their deposit in the cask rather than in the bottle. Moreover, Fonseca cellars its aged tawnies in the Douro rather than in Vila Nova de Gaia; the considerable difference in heat and humidity between these two areas lends Fonseca’s tawny ports of age a very distinctive “baked” richness reminiscent of butterscotch.

 Deep youthful ruby colour. An intense rich fruity nose of blackberry, cassis, cherry and plums, interwoven with notes of spice. The palate is full bodied and round, with a smooth velvety texture and mouth filling tannins. The juicy black fruit flavours of cherry and blackcurrant linger into the rich luscious finish.

 Deep, inky purple core with a bricking red rim. Rich, luscious and highly perfumed nose. Notes of blackberry, wild plum, logan berry, liquorice and a wonderful tension. Cloudberries give that added layer of soft, plump fruit, a mix of raspberry and redcurrant, with a hint of floral sweetness. On the palate, spice, brambles, assam tea with its traces of dark chocolate, cocoa and an alluring herbaceous hint. Good grip, concentration of dark woodland fruit, silky tannins and a fresh bright finish, with incredible length. This superb port is a blend of full, rich and fruity wines from a single year. These are carefully selected and aged in oak casks for a minimum 4 years before bottling. The grapes for this port were foot trodden in granite Lagares. The vats used to store the maturing port are called Tonels.

The characteristics of the port are its richness, depth of flavour and powerful, attractive bouquet.

In order to retain as much depth as possible, the port has been bottled in the same way as vintage port, without filtering, so the port may throw a deposit in the bottle.

Ready to drink now. It is excellent with cakes, red and black fruit jams, cheeses, tiramisu or as a digestive.

This innovative new Rosé style of port has been made by a new technique which extracts fresh fruity flavours and the pink colour from limited contact with the skins of the grapes.

The result is a light and fresh Rosé port with lots of red berry flavours. There are attractive floral notes, aromatic red berry fruit leading to a palate which is full of deliciously ripe cherry and raspberry fruit flavours.

Wiese & Krohn's estate Quinta do Retiro Novo is located in Sarzedinho, a small village in the Rio Torto valley. Quality is determined by the grape varieties, by the age of the vines, their method of training and the density of planting. All these factors are officially converted into points, the sum of which determines the final classification of the property. Here, this sum exceeds 1200 points, ensuring it belongs to a select group of "Class A" properties. 

Vintage 2011 was so widely declared because of the exceptional weather conditions which differed quite dramatically from the rest of Europe. A wet Autumn in 2010 left subsoils nicely damp and able to cope with the near drought conditions that ensued in the first half of 2011, then a cool summer helped to maintain freshness and avoid any overly dry, raisiny characteristics. Some welcome splashes of rain at the end of August and early September helped to ripen tannins (and bring them back in line with sugar levels) then the dry days and cool nights that followed provided perfect picking conditions. The result is a superb single Quinta Port from the excellent and early drinking 2011 vintage.

Warrior is the oldest mark of Port in the world, having been shipped continuously since the 1750’s. The name Warrior was branded on the cases of Warre’s Finest Reserve Ports since the earliest days of the firm. The traditional style has been maintained over the years and it is today a classic fullbodied wine with wonderful richness and balance.

Warrior is drawn from Warre’s finest Tuintas in the Pinhao and Rio Torto valleys that produce Warre’s Vintage Ports. The firm’s head winemaker, Charles Symington, will select vats of particularly rich and fruity Port to set aside for maturing in oak casks in the lodges at Vila Nova de Gaia.

This 40 Year Old is a remarkable Tawny Port blend that captivates the tasting through its powerful and complex nuttiness aromas in harmony with spicy notes, warm roasted coffee and cinnamon hints from the long contact with oak wood during the ageing process. On the palate, an array of flavours flourishes, mainly toasted nuts and chocolate. The 40 Year Old is an intense and complex port with a mellow and spicy aftertaste.

The Port is an excellent aperitif or an accompaniment to almond pie of dark chocolate.
