The grapes for False Bay Bush Vine Pinotage stem from a single vineyard of unirrigated bush vines in Stellenbosch. The attraction to this mature (planted in 1996), coastal, bush vine vineyard were the cooler temperatures and small, naturally balanced and concentrated berries. Made by Waterkloof's talented young Cellarmaster Nadia Barnard. Balanced grapes are hand harvested, fermented spontaneously with wild yeast and then raised in large wooden casks (or 'foudre' en Francais). The resulting wine therefore, is perhaps more 'Pino' than 'Tage'. No additions other than sulphur as a preservative. Grown, made and bottled in South Africa. A dark ruby red wine with purple hints. It is medium bodied and has aromas of dark fruits such as blackberry and blackcurrant and some savoury notes of cedar and roasted coffee.

The palate has cassis, layered with dark chocolate with dark chocolate and spices, balanced by fresh juicy fruits and bouncy acid, the wine has fine tannins and a smooth finish.

The Colchagua Valley extends from San Fernando in the north to Chimbarongo in the south. The climate is Mediterranean, and the area receives winds from the south and morning fog. Springs are frost-free, and summers are very warm, which encourages proper ripening. Summers are hot but with cool night temperatures. The soils are medium to very deep, of alluvial origin, and have a silty-loam texture that allows for good vine development. The grapes were hand picked in late April and early May and submitted to a week-long pre-fermentation cold treatment at 8ºC (46ºF) to extract more fruit characteristics. Alcoholic fermentation took place at 25º–28ºC (77º–82ºF) with pumpovers determined  by daily tastings through the end of the process. A post-fermentation maceration followed, and then the wine was devatted, separating the free-run wine from the skins. Malolactic fermentation took place naturally. 20% of the wine was aged in French oak for 6 months and then blended for a more complex character.

An approachable style of claret that has a ripe and round plummy nose with a hint of wood spice, cinnamon and nutmeg. Full bodied and well structured, this is a lean wine with gentle tannins. Made from 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc.

The Côtes du Rhône is made from various types of soils, but mostly from limestone terraces with sand and red clay.

The colour is purple tinged garnet. The aromatic range of the nose goes from fresh berries (wild raspberry, blackcurrant and blackberry) to spices.

The palate is big and full flavoured with silky smooth tannins and touches of liquorice and pepper.

This is an intense, brilliant garnet coloured wine. It has lovely fruit, loads of body and a heady bouquet of ground peppers, raspberries, currants and spices. The wine is full bodied and dense and is rich and elegant.

A wonderful rich red wine that is made just 3 metres outside the northern border of Chateauneuf du Pape so must be classed as Cotes du Rhone.

A most elegant yet modern wine with mature fruit notes, well integrated with vanilla and hints of cacao from the 12 months spent in American oak. On the palate it is broad and full with an attractive cacao flavour, soft tannins and a lovely balance.

Peoples Choice Winner 2023: Big Night in Red

 A modern style of Rioja which is made using 100% Tempranillo grapes which are grown in some of the best areas in Rioja Alavesa.

The wine is aged in American oak barrels for 24 months then aged for a further 12 months in bottle before release.

The nose is dominated by well ripened fruits, strawberries and toasted notes with hints of leather. The palate is deep and warm, well rounded with smoky notes. The wine is rich and full flavoured.

Good with barbeques and cold meats. 

Cherry-red colour with the violet nuances of a young wine. Intense on the nose, which brings notes of red fruits, creamy toffee and strawberry. The attack is fresh and easy-drinking, with a fruity, balsamic finish in which hints of the nose return

Grapes are selected and destemmed before crushing. The wine spends 12 - 14 months in toasted American oak barrels which lend spicy aromas and flavours to the wine.

The wine is Garnet red with tawny hues. Juicy hedgerow fruits and a touch of smoky vanilla on the nose backed by hints of cedar spice. Smooth and well structured with a lingering finish.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (40%), Syrah (40%), Cinsault (15%) and Carignan (5%) Grapes are grown on 15-20 year old vines on sandy limestone, with clay sub-soils. All four varietals were hand harvested and fermented in concrete vats for 10 days. Malolactic fermentation begins spontaneously, after which the wine was blended and then aged for 16 months in concrete vats.

A heady perfume of freshly picked irises and peonies drift above the crushed berry fruit nose. The fleshy, luscious, cherry flavours and hints of rose are typically vivacious, backed up with a touch of spice and good depth.

 Light and fruity. 

In the winter serve with roast lamb and in the summer chill and serve with roast barbecue chicken and pork.

Bodegas Juan Gil own over 500 hectares of vineyards, between 700 and 850 metres altitude, in the northwest of Jumilla: old bush vine Monastrell planted in chalky soils, and Shiraz grown in sandy soils on younger, trellised vines. Vinification is carried out at the winery in the heart of the Juan Gil vineyard area. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, temperature controlled, and the juice maintains contact with the skins during this 10-day process.

Grown on the rugged slopes of the Abruzzo hills, this is a rich, deep wine. The bouquet and palate are both rich in blackberry flavours, with hints of spice.

Just before harvest the grapes, when the grapes are fully mature and are ready to be picked, the stems of the bunches are twisted so that no further nourishment reaches the grapes, thus inducing a natural drying of the grapes on the vine. The bunches are left for about 12 days and lose approximately 25 - 30% of their weight in water, concentrating their flavours before harvest.

A medium bodied, easy drinking red wine made in the Salento peninsula in southern Puglia. The wine has aromas of red berry and damson fruit. Fresh and lively on the palate with juicy berry fruit and a hint of spiciness. Balanced by tangy acidity and soft ripe tannins. The wine is not oaked.

The hue of the medium dark purple Zinfandel, displays all the attractive qualities of a young wine.
